The Washington County Sheriff's Office will assist any community within Washington County, Maryland to establish a neighborhood watch program and continue to support the neighborhood watch as advisers to your community. The Sheriff's Office can provide security surveys to improve home or business security, provide printed materials, neighborhood watch signs, and other resources to aid your community in providing a safer environment in which to live.
In several of our neighborhood watch programs, citizens of the community are patrolling the streets in vehicles and on foot, acting as the eyes and ears of the Sheriff's Office. They do not get involved in enforcement activities, but do report suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office to investigate. In other programs, participants watch their neighbors homes from the safety of their home. Each neighborhood watch can be tailored to suit the needs of that particular community.
The Neighborhood Watch Program is proven to be a successful endeavor. A reduction in crime has been realized in the areas where neighborhood watches have been established.
