The Washington County Sheriff's Office is proud to have Ricky Whittington as a Deputy. The 29 year old member of the Sheriff's Office serves in the Maryland Army National Guard, and was activated to serve his country in the Afghanistan / Pakistan region of the Middle East.
Deputy Ricky Whittington began his service with the Sheriff's Office on February 10th, 1997. He served as a Correctional Deputy in the Washington County Detention Center until hired as a Patrol Deputy in January of 2002. After 6 months in the Western Maryland Law Enforcement Training Academy, Ricky is credited with handling over 1600 calls for service while assigned to the Patrol Division. That averages to over 133 calls per month during active Patrol Deputy status (sorry Ricky).

Ricky also serves in the Maryland Army National Guard, and in the beginning of July of 2003, his unit was activated. Ricky is stationed with the 290th M.P. Company and has been serving his country in the mountains of the Middle-East. It is 135 degrees in the day and 108 at night, and the troops are thankful they have air-conditioning in their tents.
The 290th MP Company was first recognized as the 29th MP Company by the Federal Government in June of 1948. The unit was used for civil disturbances during the 60's and 70's. The 29th was also part of THE D-Day landing on the beaches of Normandy in 1942. On July 15th, 1985, the 29th MP Company became the 290th Military Police Company. Since then, the 290th was activated to support Operation Desert Shield. The unit was primarily used for Prisoner of War camps in Saudi Arabia as part of the 400th MP Brigade. In response to the 9-11 attacks, the 290th MP Company, along with the 200th MP Company were assigned to guard the Pentagon.

Ricky is in constant contact with his family back home in Washington County, and is doing well. The Sheriff's Office has been assembling care packages to send to Ricky, and we plan on keeping them coming! Don't worry, Ricky, we'll send you as much 'good' food as we can!
Our best wishes, go to Ricky; he is in our thoughts and prayers. In the field of Law Enforcement, we become a close family. Ricky is a brother to us, and we miss him while he is overseas.
Hurry back, we have calls holding for you!
Deputy Whittington Visits Home
January 14th, 2004
Ricky came home for a week to see his family, and to exchange Christmas gifts with his children. While he was home, DFC Thomas Routzahn organized a gathering with Ricky's friends, family and fellow employees. The gathering was to be a surprise, but we're certain the word leaked out. Routzahn has been coordinating the assembly and shipment of care packages to Ricky.
We met at 6:00 on Wednesday, January 14th at the Broad Axe Restaurant in Hagerstown. The plan was for Ricky and his family to meet Routzahn's family so they could give Ricky's children Christmas gifts. After Ricky's arrival, he was to be met by the other guests as a surprise.

Ricky was touched to see how many of his friends came to see him. He presented the Washington County Sheriff's Office with an American flag that had flown over the skies of Afghanistan in a combat mission aboard the MQ-1L Predator Aircraft. A Plaque accompanied the flag.

Ricky was emotional when addressing his family and friends, and thanked us from the bottom of his heart for all of our support. Ricky said that without our support and care packages, he wouldn't have been able to make it.
The gathering went on for hours, one by one, everyone said goodbye to Ricky as they went home. Ricky stuck around with his friends until after midnight.
The Cake
The Sheriff's Office has (and had) several employees that are actively enlisted in the military, or that once served. We are very proud of every one. Ricky Whittington will return to Afghanistan within the next few days to complete his tour. He is hopeful that he will be returning home in a couple months. We pray that he remains safe, and comes home soon.
