WASHINGTON COUNTY FIRE POLICE

Washington County Fire Police

The Washington County Fire Police receives their authority through the Sheriff of Washington County under the Public Safety Article, Title 7, Subtitle 302. The Chief Officer of each Fire Company has the authority to request that up to three members of their company be appointed by the Sheriff to be designated as Fire Police. Each of these individuals undergo a background check by the Washington County Sheriff's Office to determine their eligibility to be sworn in as a member of the Washington County Fire Police.

A Washington County Fire Police has the powers necessary to perform the duties of a deputy sheriff while going to, functioning at, or returning from a fire, accidents, floods, other emergencies, or other functions conducted by a fire company or approved by the Sheriff.

The Washington County Fire Police are a subdivision of the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and receive their funding for equipment and uniforms through the Fire and Rescue Association. Training is provided by both the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.
