Physical Fitness Exam


All Patrol, Judicial, Correctional and Court Security Deputy Sheriff applicants for the Washington County Sheriff's Office must pass a physical fitness test. The physical fitness test is designed to demonstrate physical strength, endurance and flexibility. This line of work is physical, and employees are encouraged to stay fit and in shape.

All Patrol, Judicial and Court Security Deputy Sheriff applicants must pass a handgun familiarization test.

The following is the actual physical fitness exam, given by the Sheriff's Office. This exam must be completed successfully before any consideration is given to the applicant for the hiring process.




Sit-Up Test

TEST #1:   Sit-ups


Lie on your back with knees bent so your feet are flat on the floor. Your partner will hold your feet and count the number of correct repetitions. Your fingers are interlaced behind the head. In the UP position the elbows will touch the knees.

This test measures muscular endurance for use of force situations, restraining holds, carrying, and running at full speed.

You must perform a minimum of 30 sit-ups in a maximum of one minute

PUSH-UP TEST

TEST #2:   Push-Ups



From the prone positions, place hands palm down under shoulders, push your body upward until arms are straight, do not lock elbows. From this position, when told to start, lower your body until your chest touches your partner's fist, keeping your back straight at all times. The rest position is in the up position only.
This test measures absolute strength for use of force, lifting/carrying persons, and restraining struggling persons.

You must perform a minimum of 25 pushups in a maximum of one minute.

TEST #3:   Vertical Leap Test



Stand with one side to wall and reach up as high as possible to mark your standard reach on a yardstick. Jump as high as possible and mark the spot at your maximum leap. Your score is the best of three attempts to the nearest ½ inch.

This test measures jumping or explosive power and is an important area for police tasks that require jumping and vaulting.

The minimum score is 15.5 inches above your standard reach mark.

TEST #4:   1.5 Mile Run



The 1.5 mile run will be on a hard flat surface. This is the best cardiovascular test available.

This test measures use of force beyond two minutes.

You must run 1.5 miles in a maximum time of fifteen minutes.

How to prepare for the Physical Fitness Test

PRIOR TO ENGAGING IN THIS PROCESS, WE RECOMMEND YOU CONSULT A PHYSICIAN.

The following guidelines will help prepare you to take the Sheriff's Office Physical Fitness Test.

TEST #1: Sit-ups

Determine how many sit-ups you can do in one minute. At least three times per week, do three sets.

TEST #2: Push-ups

Determine how many push-ups you can do in one minute. At least three times per week, do three sets.

TEST #3: Vertical Leap

Measure your standard reach (standing flat footed on the floor) on a wall, and then jump and mark the wall at your maximum jump height. Do this until you can jump at least 15.5 inches above your standard reach.

TEST #4: 1.5 Mile Run

Walk/jog a 1.5 mile distance and steadily progress until you can meet the minimum requirements given above.

YOU MUST PASS ALL SEGMENTS OF THIS PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST IN ORDER TO PROCEED FURTHER IN THE HIRING PROCESS.

Handgun Familiarization Test



All Patrol, Judicial and Court Security Deputy Sheriff applicants must pass each the following five tests in order to proceed further in the hiring process.

1. With an unloaded weapon and the weapon in a normal firing grip, the pad of the trigger finger must touch the face of the trigger without radically altering the firing grip.

2. With an unloaded weapon and with no magazine in the weapon successfully pull the slide back and forth twelve (12) times with both hands.

3. With an unloaded weapon and an unloaded magazine in the weapon, successfully pull the trigger twelve times with both hands.

4. With an unloaded weapon and an unloaded magazine in the weapon, successfully depress the magazine release 3 times.

5. With an unloaded weapon and with no magazine in the weapon, pull the slide back and lock it in the open position three times.
