New K-9 on Patrol

DFC Jason Crawford now knows how much work is involved in a Police K-9 program. Crawford received his new partner, Kabar back in March of 2004. Since then, he spent 14 weeks in Patrol Dog training and another 10 weeks in Narcotic Detection training.

So far, DFC Crawford has deployed his partner numerous times, including several CDS (Controlled Dangerous Substance) scans of vehicles, some tracking and utility work. Kabar is highly obedient, and is trained in CDS Detection, as well as tracking and area and building searches

Kabar, originally from the Czech Republic is a German Shepherd, and was 2 ½ years old when DFC Crawford began working with him. Kabar rides with Crawford in his cruiser every day, and stays with him every night. It is a unique bond between dog and handler, that cannot be fully explained, but those fortunate enough to have participated in the program completely understand.

Crawford and Kabar must attend at least 16 hours training every month to keep active in the K-9 program. Crawford also is required to spend 80 hours annually to retain certification through the Maryland Police Training Commission. DFC Crawford also is a self-supporting member of the United States Police Canine Association, and attends yearly conferences and trials.

DFC Crawford is one of four K-9 handlers employed for the Washington County Sheriff's Office, and is one of two that is cross-trained for CDS and Patrol work. The other cross-trained K-9 is Irk, another German Shepherd that is handled by DFC Watson, who is currently serving his country in Iraq.
